Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota is offering a new class for those aged 55 and older who are looking to improve their health and well-being.

Stay Active and Independent for Life is similar to a previous popular program called the Bone Builder Exercise Program, but SAIL offers more movement and emphasis on balance.

Classes are at First Free Church in the Winona Mall, 1213 Gilmore Ave., and are offered from 7 to 8 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday; and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday and Wednesday. Participants should attend two to three classes per week for the best benefit.

The hourlong classes include low impact aerobics, balance exercises, strength training with dumbbells and ankle weights and stretching exercises. The program is able to accommodate people with a mild level of mobility difficulty up to those who are regularly active. The exercises focus on improving flexibility, bone and muscle strength, balance and overall fitness. A natural outcome of these fun classes is the beneficial social interaction provided along with the exercise.
